National and University Library St. Kliment Ohridski - Skopje. Available in English, this library of the former Yugolslov Republic of Macedonia offers a limited amount of information online, but you can access some databases. Members of the library have access to more sections.

NARCIS. Hosted by Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, this database provides access to scientific papers based out of the Netherlands.
The World of Dante. Study Dante's Inferno online courtesy of the University of Virginia. It has been tagged using SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) to enhance the interface and study of this poem.
Southwestern Writers Collection. Texas State University houses a huge collection of manuscripts and information on southwestern writers. Much of the information is available online in the archives.
Peace and War in the 20th Century. From McMaster University Library in Ontario, this library provides records, case studies, a time line, and more focusing on war and peace around the world in the 20th century.

American Universities

University of Texas Libraries. Browse through the multiple libraries and museums available on this site. Some access is restricted to those affiliated with the university, but there is plenty of information for the general public.
Georgetown University Library. Search you databases, journals, and special collections at this combination of both the Lauinger Library and the Blommer Science Library.
Princeton University Library . This library offers lots of information for the general public. Be sure to check out their incredible reference database too.
LSU Libraries: Special Collections. While only parts of these special collections are available online, you can learn about the oral history of Louisiana, rare books, and the Civil War.
University of Nevada, Reno Libraries. Find Basque books and films, information on Earth sciences and mining, and maps and history of the Nevada area at this library.
Washington University Libraries. Ask a librarian, find journal articles, and browse through reference sources here.
Howard University Library System. Students and non-students alike can take advantage of the databases, catalog, and faculty papers.
University of Delaware Library. In addition to access to five libraries, you can also view a digital collection, instructional media collection, and other special collections.

International Universities

The University of Edinburgh. The resources here are available to the general public; however, most licensed electronic resources are not available to non-university people.
The Library at UCD Dublin. While much of the information is restricted to either those associated with the university or visiting scholars, the general public can access electronic resources including eBooks, online reference sources, and more.
University of Oxford Bodleian Library e-Resources. This library offers a good selection of resources available to all ranging from digital archives to research articles written by Oxford authors.
Bibliotheque de la Sorbonne. Check out the electronic resources for the biggest selection available to the general public at this library. The site is completely in French.
Free University of Berlin Universitatsbibliothek. Research 700 databases and 20,000 journals in this university's digital library. The site is available in English, but some of the pages may only be available in German.
Roskilde University Library. Of the open-access services available at this library, there is a good mix of information in both English and Danish.
Stockholm University Library. Search the databases, e-books, and e-journals available at this library. Not all information is accessible by the general public, but what is available is clearly marked.
University Library Ghent. This library in Belgium offers digital databases with historic photographs and more, a section with a five-year focus on architecture, and much more. Some of the site is available in English.
Open University of Catalonia. Search for information in English, Spanish, or Catalan in this library that offers an online collection ranging across many topics including the arts, philosophy, labor sciences, law, marketing, tourism, and more.
University of Zurich. This university has made several libraries and online databases available for use. There is a mix of resources in both English and German.
National University of Singapore Libraries. Get links to information about Singapore from government to statistics as well as the ability to search the university databases.

1524 - Jan 17 - Giovanni da Verrazano, commissioned by France's Francis I, sails from the Madeiras, in la Dauphine, for the New World, probably accompanied by Jacques Cartier.

17th Century

1609 -

Hudson River was first explored by Henry Hudson.
Samuel de Champlain explores the northeastern New York area .

1614 - Fort Nassau is built near present-day Albany

1624 - The Dutch settled here permanently and for 40 years they ruled over the colony of New Netherland

1625 - The Dutch purchase Manhattan Island from the local Indians

1664 - Expedition led by Colonel Sir Richard Nicolls, one of four Commissioners appointed by the Crown to carry out military acquisition of the Dutch territories in America. Nicolls selected Sir Robert Carr to subdue the Dutch on the South (Delaware) River. Sir Robert Carr drives the Dutch off the Delaware and claims the land for James, Duke of York. Delaware becomes an English colony. Colony of New Netherland was conquered by the English and was then named New York in honor of the Duke of York.

18th Century

1765 - New York City hosts a colony conference dealing with the King of England's Stamp Act

1776 - July 9 - Existing as a colony of Great Britain for over a century, New York declared its independence becoming one of the original 13 states of the Federal Union

1777 -

April 20 - New York's first constitution was adopted
June - Election for the first governor took place.
July 9 - George Clinton was declared elected
July 30 - George Clinton was inaugurated as Governor at Kingston

1783 - November 25 - The Battle of Saratoga, one of the decisive battles of the world, was the turning point of the Revolution leading to the French alliance and thus to eventual victory. New York City, long occupied by British troops, was evacuated

1783 - December 4 - At Fraunces Tavern, General George Washington bade farewell to his officers.

1784 - "The Empire State," an expression possibly originated by George Washington

1788 - With the Revolutionary War ended, New York becomes the 11th US State
1797 - January - Albany became the capital of the State

1789 - April 30 - New York City became the first capital of the new nation, where President George Washington was inaugurated

1792 - The New York Stock Exchange, founded, and has become the center of world finance.

19th Century

1809 - Robert Fulton's "North River Steamboat," the first successful steam-propelled vessel, began a new era in transportation.

1812 - Robert Fulton's steamboat churns up the Hudson River

1825 - Erie Canal, completed

1831 - Short Lines started

1853 - Railroads started

1860s - The State of New York supplies almost one-sixth of all Union forces during the Civil War

1880s- Overland transportation grew rapidly from a system of turnpikes established in the early 1880s to the modern day Goveror Thomas E. Dewey New York State Thruway.

1886 - The Statue of Liberty, with its famous inscription, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," was the first symbol of America's mission.

20th Century

1900s - Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt achieved the presidency; and Nelson Rockefeller served as vice president. Governors Charles E. Hughes, Alfred E. Smith and Thomas E. Dewey all were candidates for the presidency.

1901 - President William McKinley is assassinated in Buffalo

1918 - The Erie Canal was replaced by the Barge Canal
1929 - New York stock market crashes
1932 - Lake Placid hosts the Olympic Winter Games
1939 - World's Fair opens in New York City
1946 - New York City is chosen as the site of the United Nations
1959 - St. Lawrence Seaway opens
1964 - World Fair opens (again) in New York City
2001 - World Trade Center attacked by terriorists

The area that is now Manhattan was long inhabited by the Lenape Indians. In 1524, some Lenape in canoes met the Florentine Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European explorer to pass New York Harbor, although he may not have entered the harbor past the Narrows. It was not until the voyage of Henry Hudson, an Englishman who worked for theDutch East India Company, that the area was mapped.Hudson came across Manhattan Island and the native people living there in 1609, and continued up the river that would later bear his name, the Hudson River, until he arrived at the site of present day Albany. A permanent European presence in New Netherland began in 1624 with the founding of a Dutchfur trading settlement on Governors Island. In 1625 construction was started on a citadel and a Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, later calledNew Amsterdam (Nieuw Amsterdam). Manhattan Island was chosen as the site of Fort Amsterdam, a citadel for the protection of the new arrivals; its 1625 establishment is recognized as the birth date of New York City.According to the document by Pieter Janszoon Schagen our people(ons Volck)—Peter Minuit is not mentioned explicitly there—acquired Manhattan in 1626 from Native American Lenape people in exchange for trade goods worth 60 guilders, often said to be worth 24 dollars, though (by comparing the price of bread and other goods) actually amounts to around $1000 in modern currency(calculation by the International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam). In 1647, Peter Stuyvesant was appointed as the last Dutch Director General of the colony. New Amsterdam was formally incorporated as a city on February 2, 1653. In 1664, the British conquered New Netherland and renamed it "New York" after the EnglishDuke of York and Albany, the future King James II. Stuyvesant and his council negotiated with the British to produce 24 articles of provisional transfer that sought to guarantee New Netherlanders liberties, includingfreedom of religion, under British rule. The Dutch Republic regained it in August 1673 with a fleet of 21 ships, renaming the city "New Orange". New Netherland was ceded permanently to the English in November 1674 by treaty.
