Art Expert: Leonardo da Vinci Painted a Nude Version of the Mona Lisa: "Italy According to Florentine art expert Renzo Manetti's new book, The Mona Lisa's Veil, there is good evidence that Leonardo da Vinci painted both a clothed and unclothed version of his best known painting, the Mona Lisa. Renaissance artists, drawing on Neoplatonic philosophy, often produced portraits in 'vulgar' and 'heavenly' form. Manetti writes that the painting Monna Vanna by Andrea Salai, student of Leonardo's, is very likely inspired by the missing artwork.'Even though the [nude] painting has been lost, there are at least 10 reproductions or comparable works, painted by pupils or disciples, which enable us to reconstruct the original,' wrote Manetti."
