Van Gogh to highlight RU art exhibit | WSLS 10

World famous art will be on display for a short time in Southwest Virginia.

A unique art exhibit at Radford University will help kickoff the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' 75th anniversary celebration.

"Van Gogh, Lichtenstein, Whistler: Masterpieces of World Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts" will feature works by the aforementioned artists. The pieces date back as early as 5th century B.C., and that were constructed as recently as late 20th century.

More than 30 pieces on display range from million dollar paintings like Van Gogh's "Wheat Field Behind St. paul's Hospital, St. Remy" to a Chinese wine vessel which museum officials say dates back more than 3,000 years ago.

RU's Art Museum underwent significant renovations to obtain the timeless collection such as the installation of museum-standard lighting, an improved climate-control system, and enhanced security measures.

The VMFA was built in 1936 in Richmond to serve as the state's flagship art museum and headquarters for an art educational network. The goal was to bring masterpieces from throughout the ages to every corner of the commonwealth.

"What are the chances that people would have to go and see a Van Gogh, a Lichtenstein, without going to D.C., and making that 5-hour drive, and even there, you might not find them," said museum co-director Richard Bay.
