Retracing 17th-century Arctic expedition: Voice of Russia

Russian history enthusiasts assembled on Lake Onega east of St Petersburg have started testing two 17th-century-style sailing boats ahead of taking them to the Arctic on an expedition to retrace the European discovery of the Bering Strait by the Russian Cossack Semyon Dezhnev in 1648.

This country has declared 2012 a Year of the Russian Arctic. The area includes the strategically important Northeast Sea Passage from Western Europe to East Asia.
