Musée Départemental Georges de la Tour launches subsciption appeal for painting by Simon Vouet « AMA

The Musée Départemental Georges de La Tour in Vic-sur-Seille has launched a public subscription appeal to acquire a painting attributed to Simon Vouet. Although the price of the work has not been announced, as negotiations with Richard Nagy Gallery are still underway, the subscription has been set at €100,000.

This patronage appeal follows upon that of the Louvre, who bought Les Trois Grâcesby Cranach in autumn 2010, and the forthcoming acquisition of a Jules Dupré by the Musée de L’Isle-Adalavait after appeals to public generosity.

The Musée Départemental Georges de La Tour hopes to collect the necessary amount for the seventeenth century painting, presumed to be a portrait of Virginia da Vezzo, before 2 October 2011. The work is the subject of an exhibition focusing on Simon Vouet’s portraits and highlighting the painter’s role in seventeenth-century Parisian art production.

The exhibition was inaugurated on 12 June 2011 and will close on the last day of the public subscription appeal. On 2 October 2011, the painting will either remain on the walls of the French museum or return to its owner, a London art gallery.
