9/11 Anniversary - Watch the World Trade Center Towers in Movies - Metropolis - WSJ

73 Movies Starring the World Trade Center

“Nothing you have ever experienced will prepare you for the absolute carnage you are about to witness,” Dan Akroyd tells Eddie Murphy as they walk past the World Trade Center in “Trading Places,” their 1983 film about hijinks on Wall Street. “Super Bowl, World Series, they don’t know what pressure is. In this building, it’s either kill or be killed.”

During their 27-year reign over the New York City skyline, the north and south towers of the World Trade Center had cameos in many movies — not all of them as awkward in retrospect. Dan Meth, a cartoonist in New York, put together the above supercut of 73 such appearances by the towers in film. It’s worth three minutes and 20 seconds of your time.

In this blur of clips, the World Trade Center can’t help but be a looming presence. That’s quite intentional in movies like “King Kong” (the 1976 version) and less so in “When Harry Met Sally” (1989), where an establishing shot of the towers through the Washington Square Arch takes on new meaning, instantly recalling that lost New York image. In fact, so many of the clips are establishing shots that you have to wonder which buildings have come to represent the city in the decade since 9/11. But that’s a supercut for another day.

Below, we’ve compiled all of the movies referenced in Meth’s compilation with links to each IMDB page. And if the movie was available for streaming on Netflix as of last week, we’ve included a link to that, as well. An even more exhaustive collection of films is available here.
