Edinburgh University marks 300th anniversary of birth of David HumeEdinburgh University is celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of philosopher David Hume with a year-long series of events.

Eminent speakers from across Europe and the US have been invited to speak at the university where Hume (1711-1776) studied.

The programme of lectures, exhibitions and activities, which begins on Tuesday, will explore Hume's legacy and his ties to the university.

Hume and his associates were at the heart of the Enlightenment's intellectual, literary and cultural events - a golden age when Edinburgh became known as the Athens of the North.

The university said that although he wrote in the 18th century, his works continue to be relevant to the philosophical disputes of the current day.

The celebration begins with the first in a series of Hume seminars hosted by the university's Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities in Hope Park Square.
