WAMC: Major French Art Exhibit Will Premier In WMass. (2011-10-05)

(WAMC) - A major traveling art exhibition is going to make its initial stop in Springfield Massachusetts. Officials predict it will draw international tourists to western Massachusetts this winter.. WAMC"s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports..

The traveling exhibition of 50 French masterpiece paintings will premier in mid December at the Springfield Museums Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts. The paintings belong to the Wadsworth Atheneum, America's oldest public art museum, and it will be first time a full scale survey of its distinguished collection of French paintings will be exhibited.
Heather Haskell, the director of the Springfield Art Museums says the exhibition, titled " Old Masters To Monet" covers 300 years of French painting from the 17th century into the beginning of the 20th century.
The traveling exhibition will be augmented with French paintings from the Springfield Art Museum's permanent collection, which number about 100.
Holly Smith-Bove, president of the Springfield Museums said this will be the first major traveling art exhibition the museums have hosted since the late 80s.
Smith-Bove would not say how much it will cost the Springfield Museums to host the exhibition. Its being funded in large part by an endowment set up by museum benefactors Michele and Donald D'Amour in 2008 for the purpose of bringing major art exhibitions to Springfield.
Peter Rosskothen, who is chairman of the board of the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau said his members will aggressively promote the exhibition.
The exhibition of Fre nch masterpiece paintings is scheduled to be at the Springfield Musuems between December 13th and April 29th, 2012.
