New York - The Cambodian government officially received two 10th century Khmer Empire artifacts looted from the country over forty years ago.
The statues depict mythological characters from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. They show Duryodhana, the leader of the Kauravas, and Bhima, one of the Pandavas in fighting postures. The statues were believed to have been stolen from the 1000-year-old Prasat Chen temple of Koh Ker in 1972, and are two of nine figures which formed a tableau in the temple and were hacked off at their bases by looters during the civil war.
The scene depicted is from a famous duel between Bhima and Duryodhana at the end of the bloody Kurukshetra war. Bhima strikes Duryodhana down as the Pandavas, Krishna and two attendants look on.
